Toyota recalls 1.7m cars worldwide over Takata airbag defect

Mubasher: Toyota recalled another 1.7 million vehicles worldwide for potentially defective Takata airbag inflators within the framework of a multi-year recall campaign announced in 2016.

The recall would cover vehicles from the models produced between 2010 and 2015, while the affected vehicles include 1.3 million in the US.

At least 23 deaths worldwide were linked to the rupturing of Takata airbag inflators, including 15 in the US.

More than 290 injuries worldwide have been reported over the defective airbag inflators which could explode, spraying metal shrapnel.

In total, 19 auto manufacturers worldwide recalled more than 100 million potentially defective vehicle inflators, including around 10 million in the US as part of what was already the largest-ever recall campaign in history.

The faulty inflators led Takata to file for bankruptcy protection in June 2017.

Auto part maker Key Safety Systems finalised a $1.6 billion deal to purchase Takata.
